The Westin Story
The story of Westin began in Sweden in 1952 and is closely linked to the late Ingvar Westin. A skilled toolmaker by trade, Ingvar was driven by precision, craftsmanship and an uncompromising passion for perfection.
The very first Westin lure was not originally created for fishing at all, but as a toy for his children. Ingvar carved a wooden fish that wriggled and rolled through the water in an incredibly lifelike way. Because it resembled an oversized pike lure, he named it “Jätte”, the Swedish word for “giant”. Thus, the legendary Westin Jätte was born.
Although designed as a toy, the Jätte quickly revealed its true potential. Its perfect balance and distinctive side-to-side swimming action were unlike the pike lures of that time. Local pike fishing experts noticed that the lure’s size and unique movement irresistibly attracted the biggest predators. The children’s toy had found a serious purpose among adult anglers.
Before long, pike fishermen around Ingvar’s home in Skutskär near Gävle were requesting more and more Jätte lures in a variety of colors. They fished them successfully in lakes, rivers and the brackish waters of the Baltic Sea – prime habitats for trophy pike. Ingvar soon found himself running a busy production operation.
By 1977, when the Westin Jätte allegedly landed a giant pike exceeding 20 kg in the archipelago of Norrtälje, the lure had become famous far beyond its region. The “Westin Roll” – the lure’s rolling action – became a defining concept in modern predator fishing.
What started as a child’s plaything evolved into a respected brand within the fishing tackle industry.
